Maritzburg at HUGE Risk of Relegation
Maritzburg United are walking a tightrope between retaining their Premier Soccer League (PSL) status or being relegated following their 1-1 draw with reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday, 16 September.
Both teams were in action at Loftus Versveld in Pretoria, with Sundowns gaining 71% possession of the ball compared to Maritzburg’s measly 29%. This allowed Sundowns to gain a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, courtesy of a goal from midfield wizard Bradley Ralani.
Yellow cards given to Amadou Soukouna and Renaldo Leaner did hamper Maritzburg’s efforts somewhat, but they managed to bounce back with an equaliser from Jose Ali Meza in the 71st minute.
The 1-1 draw means that Maritzburg are sitting in 14th place on the PSL logs with 30 points – hovering just one spot above the relegation zone currently occupied by Marumo Gallants and Chippa United.
However, Chippa and Gallants are set to play against Golden Arrows and Swallows FC, respectively, this Saturday, 20 May – should they prove triumphant in their matches, Maritzburg could be relegated sooner than they think.
